The project is publicizing the main conclusions as widely as possible in order to stimulate
debate on the importance of the UN in the 21st century. The
60th anniversary of the UN in October 2005 provided the impetus
to accelerate dissemination efforts as well as to stimulate
additional exploration of the UN's record by academics and graduate
students, by journalists and policy analysts, in both developed
and especially developing countries.

The UN and
Global, Regional, and National Development Challenges:
How did it Fare and How Does the Future Look? First Results of the
United Nations Intellectual History Project
A two-day United Nations Intellectual
History Project conference in collaboration with the
Norwegian
Institute of International Affairs highlighted the results from
UNIHP research to date. The
conference
brought together development specialists to discuss the role of
the UN in the face of development challenges of the 21st Century.
It included presentations on the UNIHP books,
Ahead
of the Curve, UN
Contributions to Development, UN
and Global Political Economy,
Quantifying
the World, and
UN
and Development Cooperation. The first day of the
conference
focused primarily on development and development co-operation,
past and future. The focus of the second day was on two themes –
highlights of the oral history project, and a discussion of international
economic relations, regional perspectives, and statistics. It ended
with a panel discussion about the future of the UN and the Bretton
Woods Institutions.
